Vote for children’s rights, protection, and welfare this May elections

We all know that it takes a village to raise a child. But who exactly is in this village?

The family, yes—mom, dad, ate, kuya, tita, tito, and lolos and lolas. But beyond the household, there are also compassionate neighbors, teachers, and community leaders. In truth, the village is much bigger than we often realize. All of us play a part in nurturing the next generation.

As we approach the May 2025 elections, voters will be key decision-makers in this “village.” The leaders we elect will shape the kind of community our children grow up in, the opportunities they have, and the values we uphold as a society. By voting wisely, we contribute to securing a better future for the next generation.

In the noise of the campaign season, it’s essential to listen carefully. Go beyond voting based on popularity or name recall—take a minute or two to check candidates’ track records and ask yourself:

  • What is their stance on issues affecting children?
  • Have they been involved in any actions that may have harmed children or their families?
  • What concrete programs have they successfully implemented? (For candidates with prior leadership experience)
  • Do they have clear, actionable programs for children? (For first-time candidates)

An informed vote is a powerful vote. Let’s choose leaders who will truly prioritize the welfare of our children.

According to 2024 data from the Senate Economic Planning Office, poverty incidence is on the rise among Filipino children aged 0 to 17. This means Filipino children are not only struggling financially, but their education, healthcare, and nutrition are also at risk.

Social and environmental issues disproportionately affect children. In the Philippines, this is reflected in challenges such as childhood and teen pregnancies, child abuse (including sexual violence), displacement during disasters, child labor, and insufficient support for children with disabilities.

The to-do list for Filipino children is long. As voters, parents, and community leaders, it is our responsibility to choose candidates with the skills and genuine desire to address these issues. Be cautious of those who make promises but lack the track record or capability to follow through.

Before casting your vote, ask yourself this powerful question: Would you trust this candidate to care for your child—or any child? If the answer is yes, they may be the right person to prioritize children’s welfare. If you’re unsure, take time to explore other candidates who are truly committed to children’s rights.

Verify their platforms through official government websites and reputable news sources. An informed vote is a powerful vote.

You and I have the power to create positive change for every Filipino child. By voting with children’s rights and welfare in mind, we help shape a brighter future for our nation. This May, remember: your choice today can make all the difference for our children’s future.
